Today, Google honoured famous chemist Otto Wichterle, who invented the world's first soft contact lens, which changed the lives of millions of people around the world. On his 108th birthday, the doodle honoured the Czech inventor.
Otto Wichterle, who was he?
Wichterle was born in Prostjov, Czech Republic, on October 27, 1913. Wichterle completed his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology in 1936, after a lifetime of piqued scientific curiosity.
During the 1950s, he worked as a professor at the aforementioned institute while also developing an absorbent and translucent gel for ocular implants. Wichterle was compelled to quit the institute due to political upheaval.
Soft contact lens development
He didn't, however, stop working on the transparent gel. He would subseqently continue developing the gel at home, and in 1961, he introduced the world to the world's first soft contact lenses.
He constructed a DIY device out of a child's erector set, a bicycle light battery, a phonograph motor, and homemade glass tubing and mouC
Contact lenses are not the only option.
Contact lenses aren't the only thing he's known for, though. He also created the groundwork for smart biomaterials, which are utilised to heal human connective tissues, as well as bio-recognisable polymers, which have inspired a new medication administration standard.
Accolades and honours
After the Czech Republic was founded in 1993, he was elected as the first President of the Academy of Czech Republic for his accomplishments and inventions that genuinely revolutionised the world.
The asteroid number 3899 was named after Wichterle in the same year. On September 1, 2006, a high school in Ostrava (in the district of Poruba) in the Czech Republic was named after him. Wichterle died on August 18, 1998, when he was 84 years old.
